The ultimate meaning of the iconic building may be partially open, but is consistent enough to provoke the pilgrim, or tourist, to try to decipher the icons. The succesful builing is, in effect, a giant iconostatis asking to be decoded, which is why people come back again and again to try to phantom the meaning.
